The Lewes Christmas Parade: Small-Town Holiday Magic at Its Best

There are certain traditions that just feel like home, and for folks around Delaware, the Lewes Christmas Parade is definitely one of them. This is pure small-town charm, its the kind of event where you run into your neighbors, kids wave at every passing float, and everyone’s just happy to be out there together.

When the Town Comes Alive

The parade happens on the first Saturday of December each year, kicking off around 5:00 PM as the sun starts to set. (In 2025, that’s Saturday, December 6.) Timing it at dusk is half the magic since those holiday lights really stand out once it gets dark, and there’s something nice about watching floats glow as they roll through the historic streets.

The route typically runs down Savannah Road into the heart of historic downtown Lewes, winding its way toward Second Street and wrapping up near the old-town area. It’s not a super long parade, but that’s part of what makes it perfect for families with little kids who might not last through an hour-long event.lewes parade

What Makes It Special

So what can you expect? A little bit of everything, honestly. Decorated floats put together by local businesses and community groups, classic cars all decked out for the holidays, marching bands playing festive tunes, youth groups waving from wagons, vintage vehicles that look like they drove straight out of a Christmas movie. Some years there are horses, some years there are fire trucks with Santa riding along. It changes a bit year to year, but it’s always that perfect mix of hometown spirit and holiday cheer.

Once the last float rolls through, everyone heads over to Zwaanendael Park for the official tree-lighting and a candlelight caroling session. It’s one of those things that makes Lewes special: the whole town standing together, candles flickering, singing carols under the lights. The tree lighting itself is simple but beautiful, and it turns the whole evening into a longer celebration instead of just a quick parade and done.

Kids love it because there’s always something moving, something lit up, something to point at. Grandparents love it because it feels like parades from way back. And everyone in between just appreciates getting to slow down for an evening and celebrate together.

Tips for First-Timers

If you’re planning to go, here’s what you should know: get there early. Parking fills up fast, especially along Savannah Road and Second Street. Streets close for the parade, so give yourself some extra time to find a spot and walk in.

Dress warm. December evenings near the coast can be chilly, and you’ll be standing outside for a while for the parade, and then for the tree lighting at the park. Layers are your friend! Don’t forget your scarves, hats, gloves, and warm shoes. If you’ve got little ones, bring a blanket or even some folding chairs so they can sit and still see.
